Eligibility

  • Scholarships are open to aspiring writers aged 15-18.
  • Priority is given to students who do not have access to creative writing courses at their high school.
  • No letters of recommendation are required. We are not concerned with your GPA. We simply want to see good writing that shows promise.

Submission Requirements

  • Before you begin this application: Be sure you have a properly formatted manuscript* to upload.
  • Applications that do not include a manuscript will not be considered. *Manuscripts should be double-spaced and should be in a font of 12 pt or higher.
  • Please include a cover letter explaining why you want to write fiction or memoir and how this scholarship will benefit you. (You will be provided a space to type your cover letter later in the application.)

Required Writing Sample:
Please upload an original creative writing sample of 500 - 1,500 words. This can be a flash fiction or group of flash fictions, a short story, or a personal essay or memoir. If you are working on a novel or novella, you may submit an excerpt.

If you have never completed a short story, that's okay! Just provide us with a piece of writing that you feel represents you.

We aren't looking for perfection. We aren't looking for any particular subject matter.  We are looking for unique voices, for fresh, imaginative writing.

Our advice to young writers? If you want to be a writer, be a reader. Read widely and well. Read in many genres. Read for pleasure and for enlightenment. Read every day. The writing will follow.
